“We don’t like white babies”

We had to go to Sam’s Club the other night to stock up on diapers and decided to combine the trip with our traditional Sam’s Club $4 date night (2 hot dogs, a huge fountain drink, and a cinnamon sugar pretzel).  We found a table right next to a cute little black family with 2 funny little girls who obviously did not realize how loudly they were talking.  Adeline was a little fussy so I was holding her in my lap while we ate.  The 2 little girls (probably about 6 years old) next to us were discussing babies.  Here is how their conversation went:

girl #1:  I once got to rub a baby.  You ever rubbed a baby?

girl #2:  No, but I want to rub that baby. (referring to Adeline)

girl #1:  Go ask them if you can rub that baby.

girl #2:  No, you go ask them!

girl #1:  But we don’t like white babies!

This is the part where I almost choked on my hot dog because I was laughing so hard!  The girls continued to hover and eventually made eye contact.  We smiled at them and one of the girls said “we’re not supposed to talk to strangers” and they both ran to their mom who was in line ordering their food.  After a few minutes the came back and politely asked if they could rub my baby.  I probably crushed their spirits when I told them they could see the baby, but not rub her.  Luckily, she was in the carrier, so it would have been hard to rub her anyway, unless they were planning on rubbing her face.  They ooh-ed and ahh-ed over Adeline for a few minutes (who can blame them?).  I guess they really do like white babies after all!

kids are so funny! We used to watch family feud all the time and my little sister once said that she wanted one family to win because the other one was black. My family has never made racists comments, and she was only 3 or 4. Maybe it is inborn to notice the differences between us?
