Robert "Bobby" Thomas Egbert, was born on Sunday December 12, 2010 at 9:32 pm. He weighed 7 lb 1 oz and was 20 inches long. He came exactly 1 week early, which worked out perfect for us. We were really hoping he wouldn't wait all the way until his due date! Saturday night we headed over to Hannah and Garrett's for Rob's surprise man shower. We had a great time hanging out with some of the other residents, but by the end of the night, I was pretty uncomfortable. I had been having light contractions for about the past month, but these ones were starting to get more painful.
Sunday morning I woke up at 3:30 am to some more contractions. I started timing them and they were about 6 minutes apart. They weren't horribly painful, but I couldn't sleep so I took a shower and made sure my hospital bag was ready. I got back in bed to try to relax a little the contractions slowed down and I actually fell asleep in between a few of them. By breakfast time I was all ready to head to the hospital, but now the contractions were about 10 minutes apart so I just had to wait it out. It was a long day of waiting. By noon the contractions were miserably painful, but still about 7 minutes apart. We sat around watching tv and timing contractions until around 3:00 when they all of a sudden started coming 4 minutes apart and by this time they were really painful. We quickly jumped in the car and went to the hospital. They checked me out and told me I was very far along and that the baby would be born really soon.
Once they got me into the delivery room it seemed like forever before they got me the epidural. They gave me some other pain meds to hold me over until the epidural came which I was extremely grateful for! Then Bobby decided to take his sweet little time and we waited and waited and waited. I was so exhausted that I was in and out of sleep and, according to Rob, talking some crazy nonsense. By the time I was fully dilated, the nurse had me start pushing. I pushed once and she told me to stop and the doctor came right over and I pushed 2 more times through 1 contraction and Bobby was born. My parents had just gotten into town the day before and they brought Adeline over to the hospital but she was not interested, she was just mad to be woken up!
Everything went smoothly in the hospital and I was feeling pretty good (much better than I felt after Adeline was born). We took Bobby to the pediatrician the day after we got home from the hospital and his jaundice level had jumped way up so we had to put him on a billi blanket for a few days. We had to keep taking him in to get his billirubin levels checked. Luckily, by Monday morning we were able to take him off the blanket and he's doing great. He is a fantastic eater (I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this!) and he is very calm. He's still sleeping all the time and he doesn't cry too much. Adeline is having a bit of a hard time adjusting, but that was expected. It's pretty crowded in our little house with everyone here, plus add in a big Christmas tree and there's not much room for Adeline to play. It's also freezing outside, so we've been stuck inside a lot. She's been playing with Nana and Papa and loving the extra attention but I think she'll calm down a bit when things get quieter around here again (will it ever be quieter again???).
Bobby is getting cuter and cuter everyday. We don't think he looks that much like either of us, or like Adeline when she was born. It will be interesting to see what he looks like as he gets older. He has less hair than Adeline did when she was born, and Bobby's is a little lighter. He's got dark bluish brown eyes which we are sure will end up brown. He is growing like a weed. He was back up to his birth weight by 5 days old, and as of Monday, he was already 7 lb 9 oz and I'm pretty sure he's about 8 lbs by now! We are so excited to have him as part of our family and can't wait to see what personality he'll have!
